Is it possible to take a black leather jacket and lighten it enough to change the color to something like olive green?

Light to dark is easier, you will struggle with black. Depends how far the present finish has gone into the leather and whether you want to risk ruining it by using powerful chemicals to strip it.

How about an intro?

Hi Mike
If you have the jacket inhand you could try experimenting on some hidden bits of leather. Try working a patch with a cloth with some rubbing alcohol on it, if that doesnt work try increasing the strength of the solvents, naptha, cellelose thinners, acetone etc. Make sure you do this in a well ventilated area and wear gloves. You might find someting that removes the existing finish, you mihht not in fact you might find the leather reacts badly, its a chance you take. Best scenario is the one where the existing finish lifts off and leaves you with a greenish base stain that you might like or will provide the basis for a redye.
Experiment is all you can do. All depends how far you want to go and how much time you want to spend ....and how much you want to risk messing up the garment.
