40's Sheepskin Types?

So I'm wanting to get into making some sheepskin jackets and the like, but would like to get the proper sheepskin, skins. In the 40's what the way they tanned the hides? What breeds did they use? What pile length? Just really all that information so it's the proper hides for the proper decade of manufacture?

Probably used sheepskin rather than lambskin. Bigger pelts thicker leather, different tanning methods that are likely outlawed in Western countries today due to pollution considerations.
A friend of mine has been looking for old style skins for several years with no luck.
