I respectfully disagree. IMO, (and I know we're talking B17s here) few experiences are as visceral as an in-your-face, close up, full throttle & low altitude P-51 pass flown by someone who obviously doesn't give jack shit about $100k+ Merlin anual overhauls... Keep 'em flying!

Agreed 100%. I suppose they were seen as just enemy aircraft only suitable for scrap, especailly as jet technology had made the piston-driven prop plane basically obsolete by 1945. Some examples were taken to PAX River in southern Maryland for evaluation, often to the point of destruction...
Also, I've never seen a pic of a non-D model '51 with the verticle fin leading edge addition/modification. Very unusual transitional Mustang, IMO. Thanks, S-M. Sorry to geek.
