Five Star IP theft?

Got some of his layered stuff as well as some printed patches - bought ‘em in a batch - nothing I would sew on a jacket I wanna keep (mean those printed things - feels like cardboard)

@ties70 didn’t he had that hump-patch with the Hugault lady you once made for me also as a printed version?

That so far about IP right …

Hey Shawn Ali.....
Apparently some asshat by the name of Sean Collins is saying that you are stealing his jacket patch artwork over on Facebook "reproduction fought jacket review"
Dear @CombatWombat

Thanks for your attention to this matter, I rarely speak on that because we believe if we are doing some contributions to this artistic and very small market, as we have a lot of big business in the other lines and it is fact that still we are contributing to this small market because of my passion due to some great friends in this forum, Our Bulk Business is much more profitable and huge quantities than this very small business, I was expecting some apperception after reproducing that patch and that was totally a matter of creativity and art, also that was not the 100% similar as some other seller is offering but had the many changes of design in that which any one with a deep eye can analyze, but that maker through me out from all of his groups without texting me any message or PM, and believe me if he do this that way I was the one who can remove all the patches section from my website, but instead of a friendly way he did this by a disrespectful way by announcing in his groups that 5* is doing unethical business, as he was also a friend to us and we were communicating directly on many business cooperation's with each other.

Still I don't mind, and consider him as a great contributor to the patch market.

Just my Thoughts

Best Regards

That's how Sean and his fan boys work. Low acts and girly gossip.

Rise above it Shawn and hold your head high.

After my statement which can be seen on the top of this page he PM-ed me on FB with a long text basically stating that his friends and eyes are everywhere and he caught me redhanded "talking bad behind his back".

Well i give no shit (sorry for the "direct" work) and blocked him

He did the same to me a couple years ago, even sending one of his minion to insult me via messenger... Bunch of assholes.

Most designs are unpatented, have no copyright and can be used for patches and artwork.

If all craftsman of patches here at VLJ will choose the same (officially approved / most common) design for a painted squadron insignia, all their patches will come out differently, depending on their skills, style, colors etc....that's the fun of it!

No one here would mistake a "Johnny Signor" patch for a Miro, Ties, a Yardstick or Vera...

The same goes for the layered and incised patches. The design might be the same, but the craftsmanship, the leather quality, the colors will vary.

A "Ties" is obviously no original:

And a "FS" is obviously no "Sean".
Thing is, they never announced their patch as such, and with layered and incised patches being theatre-made by the individual creativity of Italian, Chinese or Indian "artisans", there is hardly a case for IP or the theft of IP.

One could argue that it's a fast-track to copy other patchmakers ideas, but let's face it:
The idea (in this case for the Escadrille Sq. patch) was already fast-tracked, when in WWI Sgt Whatshisname came up with the design and everybody in the squadron wanted to have it but couldn't wait for the Sgt to paint it on but did so by themselves....

I personally see it as an hommage to other makers work or as an honor if they develop further some of my ideas.

Further, I do not see Sean's business in danger. Whoever wants the perfect layered patch, will have to order from him. If you want a reproduction of a decal-finished patch, his printed option might be your choice, too.

In painting, there are better options, be it for patches or complete artwork.

We all have our niches, but 99% of us are happy with it and do not need to badmouth the others work or, as only one does, question the other makers character.

Personally I see it that some people are just rather like a large toddler......anyway I'm of the mind that I wouldn't patch up a jacket unless it's to "cover up" where stitch holes are already on the jacket, and even then I use sci fi/nerd patches rather than anything remotely historical (I'm rather apt at handstitching using the holes already there)

In the final analysis this guy is only going to tank his own business. He seems to have a selective memory about who truly owns the rights to any of these patches… and sure isn’t him. I for one would never buy patches from him, simply because he’s trying to bully other artisans and destroy their business to enhance his own. That’s just a shitty way to do things.

Well said Ties!

Stitched stuff is peerless. Agree 100%. These days I would keep my money in the bank and go without on principle. Put my money into the accounts of the good guys instead!

Frankly, I just don't get it.
I have painted (and designed new designs for) lots of patches over the years, but there's NO real money to made in anything like this. There are a bunch of guys out there making patches. You go onto some forums and they'll choke some portions of those forums with all the patches they've painted that week.
But as I can make my own anytime I feel like, though I know most don't have that capability, I don't pay much attention. Again, there's no real money of fame to be made other than 'internet fame' which most of you would agree is fleeting and essentially worthless.
Just as CombatWombat wrote, I'm not a big fan of patching a jacket anyway. I have an A2 done up for the 91st BG as I'm a life member of that BG association, and I did one up for my active-duty service. Otherwise, I'd painted patches for people who asked for them as again, there's no real money to be made.
Let this knucklehead live in his thick blanket of self-importance. Being a legend in your own mind only gains you laughs behind your back anyway.
