First Original A-2: Russet Perry 16175 in Russet

Cool. Original Perry's are very comfortable to wear with slightly more room in the shoulders and chest. One thing that's a bummer with Perry's is the 75 year old cotton liner around the stand collar is prone to quick wear as is noticed in one of your photos. Mine has suffered from the same wear. Anyhow, congrats on what appears to be a fine Perry!

Hi everyone,

I haven't been a member here long but I do a decent amount of reading. Thanks to all the great information from you guys and members like @Brettafett @B-Man2 & @mulceber, I was able to find myself a pretty decent original jacket. I have posted some photos below taken by the seller and I won't comment on the details since I don't have nearly as much knowledge as some of you but it's a size 42 in Russet with what appears to be horsehide in very nice condition.

Another note, @Shawn Ali and I are working together to have a pattern made of this bad boy as a Christmas gift to all of you! I'd be happy to help other repro makers as well.

Seriously. Now that you’ve locked it down, can I ask how you found it, @JulianK?

No real secret to be honest, I routinely use Invaluable.com which is a website that compiles a lot of smaller auction houses in the UK and US. I usually search "leather jackets" and to my surprise I saw the Perry but it said that it was "passed" on the latest auction which meant nobody bid on it.

I emailed the auction house asking them if I could just buy it off of them since nobody else was interested and they agreed. I bothered them a ton and asked for photos from various angles and about damage, etc. but obviously they aren't as enthusiastic about jackets as the rest of you. They kindly told me that I should cover it in leather conditioner to really make it "pop". I bought it thanks to you and decided it was worth the risk if it wasn't original.

Based on the reaction from some of the well known members here, I guess it was worth taking a chance. I won't get too ahead of myself though and until the jacket is in my hands and I can get better photos, I won't get too excited.

I appreciate all the nice comments from you all and hopefully I will have it sooner rather than later!

EDIT: I missed an original Aero in similar condition earlier this year as well, sold for less than $600USD but back then I wasn't as deep into this. 20/20 in hindsight eh?

Have two A-2s inbound. One from Canada and one from the UK. One estimate is 2-3 months for Airmail... Boo.

Your Perry will be worth the wait. That is a ripper. You have invested your funds wisely....

If I'm being honest, I wasn't looking for an investment of any kind. I just wanted a single original jacket to wear from time to time. Now I'm starting to doubt whether I should even wear it haha.

There are different schools of thought on whether to wear it or not. My take is that the museums have plenty of great jackets, and gentle wear (grocery shopping, going on walks in mild weather) won’t hurt it, at least not noticeably more than the ravages of time will. I’m very much in the “wear it and care for it” camp.

Well, moment of truth gentlemen. The package arrived and I was very delicate taking the jacket out and gently placing it down. Until I realized how strong the leather on this thing was, it’s super supple, has no real weak points or areas that I could see being an issue. The snaps and zips work properly and I’ve attached a photo of the zipper below. The only thing is the collar seems to sit funny, like something heavy was placed on top of it.

In terms of fit, it’s definitely on the tighter side but not uncomfortable by any means. I don’t have any reproduction experience to compare to any other manufacturers but it feels great. I’ve taken some fit pics below, certainly can’t complain!

Upon inspection of the pockets, I managed to pull this out:

Great jacket, Julian, and a great fit. The picture you found in the pocket is amazing. It also looks to me like either the cuffs or the bottom knits have been replaced. The collar effect you remarked upon is actually a feature of the Perry contracts. I don't remember the details, but it's something about the way they installed the collar. JC's repro of that contract shows a ghost of the same collar effect as yours does:
