Top Price Top Gun Jacket

I know the price of mouton collared G-1’s has gone up in recent years, but that’s ridiculous!
To be fair, can’t say I’m surprised. It’s a pretty iconic item, wouldn’t spend that amount myself even if I had that sort of coin, but I know there’s plenty who would. Did we ever establish what contract it was, I’m sure it’s been discussed?

The Maverick helmet sold for £250k a few months ago (with a far lower initial estimate), so I can easily see this selling for a significant amount of money. Yes it’s stupid as price for a G-1 (in the same way you can obviously get an HGU-33 helmet for less than £250k), but the wealthy buyer is buying it as an iconic piece of movie memorabilia.

Personally if I was that rich though I’d much rather have a legit patched G-1 with genuine provenance from an ex Navy flyer.

Yes, but it is a different kind of investment. G-1 with genuine provenance from ex Navy flyer appear every day, I got 40-50. The genuine jacket or helmet from Top Gun movie only one or two. The person who buys these not necessarily is even into the military stuff. Scarcity is the key.

Absolutely you’re right Jorge, they appeal to a totally different collector market/audience.

Funnily enough, I picked up a US Air Cav costume earlier in the year from The Prop Store that was used in We Were Soldiers (was pretty cheap and the para M1 is a genuine issue item).

Am I missing something? Just looking at the picture, that does not look like the same jacket.

You have to be careful with prop collectors. Too much money involved for some of them to not be crooked as snakes.

The Top Gun jacket never made sense to me. It's got some fighter pilot stuff, but also some Marine stuff and some enlisted navy stuff. I'm surprised they didn't go for an 82nd Airborne patch.

This is the alternate jacket worn by Tom Cruise on the behind scenes. The original post is missing that detail but it is still an original from the movie so most likely it will command an interesting price.

This particular jacket is a size 44 so huge for Cruise. The company that made this version was Split-S Aviation. The screen used version was almost certainly a 55J14 by someone like one of the Fosters or Star Sportswear.

With the size being a 44 do you think this is potentially a misleading auction with a bogus jacket?
I don’t think it’s bogus. It’s just too big for him and wasn’t the screen worn version anyway which was no doubt smaller. There is a photo of Don Simpson wearing it so I think it probably belonged to him. Rumour has it several were made up for the likes of Simpson & Bruckheimer.

The auction catalogue is now live, so we can inspect the jacket a bit more:

Given it’s from a deleted scene and seemingly hardly worn by Cruise, and is a commercial non-issue jacket, I’m really not sure it’s that special, but I’m sure a movie collector will want it.....
