Epaulette accuracy- various repros compared to original Aeros- 21996, 18775, 15142

Not much point of having a forum like this if you can't critique repros and point out their shortcomings.

I also know there's been some underhand tricks from one or two makers over the years which have caused bad blood so I'm just hoping this doesn't become a shit flinging fight between makers.

Nothing wrong with critiquing the jackets though surely?

Nope, nothing wrong at all.

Posted on the other thread as well .

Constructive criticism is always beneficial if done with the proper mindset, attitude and approach . And we can all benefit from THAT type of exchange in terms of better and accurate repros. Unfortunately a lot of this stuff is personal and goes back years , before many of us were even here. Much of it is deserved and has been a long time coming, but to continue down this road is going to have a negative impact on this forum in terms of a lot of resentment and bad will among some of the jacket makers among us. Hell the resentment is already bubbling over. How much longer does the personal stuff have to be aired before everyone feels like their side has been heard? I personally don’t want to see anyone have a bad taste in their mouth for this place and wind up saying “fuck it”and leave the forum. Particularly jacket makers who have taught us so much about this hobby.
I own jackets from DD and from Aero and don’t really have a dog in this fight, but I don’t care to loose either of those makers and their knowledge from this forum. That’s my opinion of course and all of you are entitled to yours.
But in the end it should always come down to one simple issue, we’re all guys with a common interest and this place has been a fun and safe haven for all of us to get together and share our hobby . We shouldn’t loose sight of that.
Cheers

...calm before the storm or the eye of it or maybe it's blown over DD ;-)

I can't be arsed for starters, and secondly it's not my bag nor scope of expertise, but it might be nice if someone starts a kind of table/sheet listing in a thread/s with all the various makers jackets and what needs to happen for them to improve.

This is a more scientific approach than just firing off criticisms or flinging shit at various makers' jackets willy-nilly all over the place. Much better to have this centralised and in a constructive format. This is actually the approach we use in museums dealing with conservation and improvement issues but it translates very well to this kind of thing as well to my mind.

Wow- one photo that shows one line almost making the full "X". What you have here IS the anomaly- not the hundreds of other phot0s which show original jackets sewn the way I have illustrated. I want a repro which is typical of a contract- not a one off. What this photo shows very clearly however is that other feature which originals had and only two makers ( Diamond Dave and GW- as far as I know) get- can you see it?

The other thing the post illustrates well is the brutal and strange stitching used on Aero products- if you look at originals you don't see the zig-zag stitching combined with big holes and little blowouts like I see on many Aero os Scotland producs. That's for a different post...
the zig zag is actually indication of good thread tension, it's a good thing :)

so a fella finds his ass on a deserted island after his ship goes down. with nothing much to do but shuck coconuts, he explores every nook and cranny of the island. one day during his explorations, he stumbles across an old brass lamp. needless to say, he does as anyone would, and gives it a rubadubdub. yes, gentleman, a genie appears out of the lamp. this particular genie is a flat out gorgeous young gal. she offers our fella one wish.. the fella thinks for a coupla minutes, and being lonely, and horney as hell, he tell the genie that his wish is be inside her *****. her reply, 'your wish is my command".....and makes him into a tampon. so, just remember when dealing with genies, theres always a string attached.

Perhaps it is on heavy duty machines. It is not a thing on WWII jackets. See that’s what everyone seems to be missing. We are all copying some really cool stuff, made by some really smart and talented people back during the war. Why not improve each other instead of tearing shit down all the time? Why not listen with a kind heart, and perhaps learn your own shortcomings? But no, double down, and only think of yourself and your interests and slam anyone who gets near you. That is the ham-fisted approach of Ken.

Another suggestion for detail comparison is the rear of the collar. I often find RW and Aero to be two extremes, the Aero collar edge flush with the collar seam at the rear, while RW has wider spread collar and cover the seam more. Aero Scotland's collar, when the horsehide is new, don't tend to told back down enough to flush with the seam. This is my pet peeve, I want the collar to completely fold down to where it's supposed to be.

Way, way back I remember our maths teacher telling us a story about a guy, a bottle and a genie. He goes through the three wishes routine but at the last one the guy has a good long think before stating his wish. See, this guy was horny too so he wished that his dick was so long it would reach the ground. "Your wish is my command" says the genie who then pulls out his sword and with one swipe cuts both the guys legs off......

It was that kind of school.

Never heard of such a thing. Even if it were true it detracts from the jackets and in no way looks like any original. Not appropriate for a copy. Maybe for a Vanson or a Schott.

Are the accompanying little blowouts of leather on the opposite side a good thing too?

Zu,

Typical of saddle work and hand stitched personal items. The “pricking irons” that they use makes this type of hole perfectly. Heavier duty machines, for boot work and such, emulate that stitch.

Zu,

No sir, that is typical of an over-large leather needle being punched through veg tanned leather. It makes a dreadful hole, and the hide explosion on the back is worse.
