Fried Ostermann? I'm thinking no

Looking on Etsy and they have this described as an original Fried Ostermann M-422a, I think the colour of the leather not being seal enough or dark enough shows that it's not a Fried Ostermann. The lining is not dark red wine colour enough, although it may have been replaced. Also the collar should be dark brown mouton, although it could have been replaced. Having no label makes it suspicious, so I wonder why they should claim it is a Fried Ostermann? As a project jacket if it is genuine would make it desirable, but otherwise just a civilian jacket that needs too much work to make it worthwhile.

It’s an Ostermann, just had a crappy collar replacement. Liner looks to be original, may just be the lighting making it shine. In the pic showing the map pocket, you can see the old stitch holes that would probably match up with the ones on the outside. I. Would definitely recommend getting some better pics before dropping that much on it.

Well that's interesting. I would think the price is low considering the desirability of these jackets. Aren't they one of the more collectable M-422a's along with the Monarch? Of course having a jacket that is un-restored and pristine is the goal, but usually you have to shell out for that. That's why I usually have to look at restoring rather than buying the "mint" jackets. I don't have a source for those and they don't come up on the usual sites, unless for a premium.

If it were sent to me, would be about $400 to replace liner, knits, collar fur, label & a NOS Talon zip. Would put it around $650 invested at the current asking price/ shipping. If you can do the work yourself you can save a good bit as far as labor costs.

God help me.. I just bought it. I'll be sending it on Steve. I have no experience fixing jackets. I can sew stuff though. Good at embroidery patches, and painting as well.

Also look at the fact that originals don’t seem to be getting any cheaper. Only going to go up as time passes.

I had an original size 40, and I fit a 40 in navy jackets. Mine also had a lighter hide, more tan side of seal. I think you’ll find some of the hides varied in colour over production and then factor in wear

As for fit FO’s are less boxy than other 22a contracts. For a 40 mine was real trim, 17.5 at the shoulders and a small collar hole. They certainly present well once on, if your a 38 then the 40 should be comfortable but still look trim. I had to let mine go, the collar was too uncomfortable for my size shoulders

Thanks Skip certainly it bodes well for this jacket as it is I usually have a problem with length. As I am a five four or so.......but a 38 to forty chest.

The reason I expect it won't be too long is that WW2 era jackets were made when the average man was five seven or five eight tall, I have an original Monarch A-2 in 38 and it fits me just fine length wise. The Monarch is also a trim fitting jacket. If you are thinking why don't I just ask the seller? I'm basing my decision on my Monarch as I say and also just kind of hoping for the best as one always does in buying jackets over the Internet. Worst case scenario, I"m sure someone would take it off my hands. although it would be disappointing. The input here greatly helps, so thanks all.

My FO was 27” in length but because the shoulders were tight it was more like 26 when zipped

Hope it works for you they are a real nice navy jacket, very sharp lookers

Just got the size info, and it sounds pretty big for a 40. First of all the pit to pit is 23 inches, wouldn't that be closer to 46? Shoulder is 18, shoulder to end of cuff is 28, and length is 26.
