Sure did Carl, many thanks for postings those!

I'm interested to have a closer look at the SoF bag when it arrives (sometime this week hopefully) as the photos of your originals show that it seems to be a pretty faithful repro, well at least judging from the photos.

Ties has been schooling me in stenciling so I'm looking forward to having a go at that with it as well ;)

Never done it before Carl but Ties has explained the process and techniques to me brilliantly. I'm not too bad with a paintbrush so I'm hoping that I don't make a complete hash of it! At the least should be a fun little project.

It will be interesting to see the result !
I liked the ELC bag with the 487th job done on it but not liking it enough to pay that sort of money

I know, it's silly money when you think that it's essentially for a canvas bag and that it's not entirely accurate. I've got a bit of a thing for the 4th FG so I'm going to do it myself and at £40 the SoF one isn't going to break the bank nor enrage the better half!

I have sent you a PM
So I get the bag today, and it's great, many thanks to Alan, and I think to myself, I don't really have any use for this bag. A couple of hours later, I'm taking my son skeet-shooting, needing a bag for ammo, etc. and smart as I am, it doesn't take me very long to put two and two together.... :D

Just for my own interest, which kind of paint do you plan to use?

Hi Cédric,

I've been getting a lot of advice from Ties about how to do this. In terms of paint, apparently there's a lot of different opinions, some say enamel, others acrylics. I was originally going to use enamel paint as I scale model and have a lot of Humbrol and Tamiya paints but Ties was saying how he likes to use fabric/textile paint and so I picked some up from the local hobby shop here. You use an iron to set the paint afterwards and after that you can even wash it up to 30 to 40 degrees. I'm going to start a thread here chronicling my attempts so keep an eye out. I'm hoping the SoF bag shows up tomorrow and I can get cracking this weekend.

Thanks Smithy! I've been using stencil ink for my t-shirt, but my last attempt was not convincing. the design turned out great, but even after heat treating it, it started smudging around and... imprinted intself on th back of the t-shirt through it while washing it!! I'll have a try with textile paint.

As for the bag, I'll be glad to see what it's worth too, I'd happily lay my hand on one of those if it's not über cheap quality.

The fabric paint I bought has a good consistency, not too runny, and not unlike enamel model paint. Even if the bag doesn't arrive before the weekend I'll have a trial run on an old bit of sail fabric I have in the garage.

As for acrylic vs enamel: my girlfriend had the same dilemma before painting my old Avirex. Basically it comes down to this: enamel is more authentic, but it cracks. Acrylic is more "elastic". I'd go for acrylic model paint, it worked wonderfully on my jacket.

The SoF aviators kit bag arrived today and I am really pleased with it. The canvas is good and heavy duty, the stitching looks good and overall it seems really sound. It actually has a very army surplus feel to it, it looks and feels like a bit of military kit, not an over-engineered repro. In terms of accuracy it's very good and seems to be more accurate than it's much more highly priced competition. Obviously it doesn't have the 1940s zipper copies or NOS ones but it's a bag so I can live with that and for £40 you really can't go wrong.

I'll take some photos and post them up here when I get a chance (my free time is still devoted to a DIY room renovation at the moment!).
