NEW KNITS AND LINING

Both of the cuffs on my ELC RW 1401 are falling apart and require replacement
The lining at the collar is also starting to fall apart as typically seen with A2s that have had excessive wear.
As a result I decided to replace all the knits and lining
Contacted ELC and they are not taking repairs until the new year.
They have quoted me a price that converts to $325 cn plus shipping and handling .
Having never had jacket repairs dione before I am a novice so I ask the members here, does this seem like a reasonable price?
Are there people here in N America that will do comparable work with the proper materials ?

Thanks

Hi Fleet,

I've used Roman's Leathers in London Ontario on occasion. They did an excellent job replacing knits on a G1 and doing minor repairs on an A2, as well as taking in a motorcycle jacket for me. All work was very well done and reasonably priced. I don't know what they would charge for an entire reline. I supplied the knits for the G1.
I know they have experience with other peoples vintage military jackets, we discussed it at the time. I have no idea if they have access to the proper weave and colour cotton for an A2 lining.
Honestly, $325.00 doesn't sound all that bad to me, it's quite a bit of work. You know ELC would be using appropriate materials, but you could be in for a long wait.

Thanks ., I am just down near Hamilton
My only worry is accuracy of materials and dealers like ELC Eetc have thenm readily at their disposal
I guess I could approach another jacket maker but am not sure if they would be interested in replacing knits etc on
another makers product .

I understand.
Roman does good work, he makes his own custom jackets, but they are all of the designer/fashion type, you'd likely have to supply your own materials.
As suggested, Mark (fishmeok) might be worth a call, no idea how busy he is.
I recall someone saying US Authentic will work on other peoples products. I don't know what they're using for knits these days. The USA A2 I used to own had rather long, thin knits, nice jacket other than that.
I know Aero does refurbs, once again, overseas shipping, and probably a fairly long wait.

I would recommend sending the jacket to BK. They did an excellent job replacing the knits and lining on one of my original A2s. Their prices are very fair too.

try purchasing the correct materials from the recommended sources..BK, ELC, etc and find a local leather repair shop...I use a local chap...learned his trade in the USAF and passed it down to his kids..they run the show, do the work correctly....
My point.... there are many qualified and experianced leathersmiths out there...it is getting the right materials...you don't need to send the jacket halfway around the world, when there might be a good tradesman in your area...

£80 seems a little high just for the knits. BK charged me just over £100 to do the knits and a re-line. They made a superb job of the work. There are members here who have not have a very good experience of Aero's repairs, but I guess it depends who does the work there.

Andrew, I like how your camera displays real colors much better than mine. (Mine shows the lining as luminescent orange; I tried every possible settings, not happy)

What camera do you use?

Anyone know any recent info regarding replacement knits I'm in London is it acceptable sending an Eastman to aero as ELC quoted £150 for the new knits all over. Does anyone have details to obtain the materials to perhaps find a quality tailor nice one Art

Well done, nice job.
Where did you send the jacket to ? Greece? UK?
I have a Dubow, who could need the same “refreshing”.
Thx for the info.

Pilot, that tread was some 5 years ago, I believe things may have changed since then. Roughwear may have a good idea, but if you send an enquiry to the manufacturers of each they should be able to assist. Since BK has changed its capacity, i.e. changed from Greece to UK, you may be able to send it to UK rather than Greece?

surely while your in S. Korea (?) there would be someone who would do the stitching if you could find the materials you require. You could also try Headwind http://www.headwindmfg.com/testimonials.html

Thanks for that. I will be in France and Europe starting from 15th of Feb. and will stay at least 6-7 weeks. Sourcing the material is not a big deal, MASH has a quite good selection of spares and is arround the corner ( 2 flight hours ). I am also travelling to Japan every 2 weeks.
OK, will try my luck. Again thx.

Did I understand well, is BK now UK based?
Do they have a show-room?
