I have been looking for a while for a perfect M-444 and i just got one. This one is a large size 42 and I do not believe it was ever worn. The shearling is soft, not dried out and it does crack anywhere (which is quite rare for a WWII Navy shearling). All the seams which usually crack under slight pressure are super soft and still retain their elasticity. I owned dozens of M-445As but i never had a M-444A before. The fleece is not as thick but wearing them they feel exactly the same :). The fleece is hands down the best I have seen, and of course my kids being Minion fans think it is really "fluffy" :)
It sports a beautiful and extremely rare triple marked blackened Talon zipper. It still has it's original pocket paper tag and it came with its original NAS Seattle Quartermaster tag, which I had never seen before and leads me to believe that the jacket is indeed brand new and was never issued.

That's awesome! Congrats and that has to be almost the best condition US shearling jacket I've seen.

I remember seeing this up for sale recently and am glad it has ended up with you Tom. What a terrific untouched jacket! Are you intending to wear it?

I will wear it sparingly. The problem is that those jackets are too warm and bulky for SF weather. I already have a M-455A that I wear probably 3 times a year :)

Absolutely stunning. It's as if a time machine was used to pluck it from the past and bring it to the here and now. Thanks for the photos!

Great Scott! What a stunner! Now how come that one can be like that after all this time, but so many other USN shearlings will fall to bits if you so much as breathe on them? Wonder where it's been stored?

That's a seriously beautiful jacket. I'll be sure to give you a thumbs up if I see it around SF!

I honestly think the smell of a leather jacket is as important as the fit... or almost as important. Totally know what you mean.
